Entitled opinions (about life and literature)
    [2 Jun 2010 at 7:00pm]
The Entitled Opinions (About Life and Literature) website offers a series of podcasts based on a weekly talk show hosted by Professor Robert Harrison of Stanford University. The discussions cover a wide range of topics in literature (especially, though not limited to, the works of English and Italian authors), philosophy, and contemporary music, with occasional forays into other disciplines. The show generally takes the form of an hour-long one-to-one conversation between Harrison and a guest with expertise on the topic or author under discussion. Users can listen to the recordings via the site, or download for later consumption (the podcasts are also available via iTunes). The site's archive offers over 90 shows, dating back to September 2005.
    Existential graphs
    [2 Jun 2010 at 7:00pm]
Existential Graphs is a Web resource offering an introduction to the existential graphs system of logic, originally developed about a century ago by American philosopher Charles S. Pierce. The system offers a way of formalising and analysing logical arguments, including methods for testing proofs, but unlike more conventional formalisation systems, it adopts a graphical approach. Although the method will be unfamiliar to many students of logic, Pierce claimed that it was easier to use than traditional approaches, and this website exists in part to test this claim. The site offers a number of PowerPoint presentations which introduce the alpha and beta parts of the system (which correspond to propositional and predicate logic respectively), and an applet which allows users to experiment with the system for themselves. (There are a number of other tools, but at time of review these were not working properly.) The site was created by Bram van Heuveln of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's Department of Cognitive Science.
    Big ideas
    [2 Jun 2010 at 7:00pm]
The Big Ideas website provides information about a series of open events, mostly held in pubs in London. These aim to provide a forum for thoughtful discussion of interesting subjects: events typically begin with a question (usually broadly philosophical in nature, but sometimes also covering issues of public policy, the arts, and a range of other topics) and a very brief informal talk from someone with relevant expertise. The remainder of the evening is devoted to free, unstructured discussion between all who wish to participate. Details are also given of the parallel Big Picture events series: film screenings followed by discussion. The site also features a number of blogs by members of the team which facilitates Big Ideas events.

    [2 Jun 2010 at 7:00pm]
Metacognition as a Precursor to Self-Consciousness (MPSC) is the website of a collaborative research project, coordinated by Joëlle Proust of the Institut Jean-Nicod in Paris. The project comprises seven sub-projects, based around Europe and in the USA, dealing with a range of different aspects of philosophy of mind and cognitive science. One of the sub-projects, Metacognition from a Logical Point of View (based at the University of Bristol) is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Others have a more scientific focus, and include studies of animal thought, human cognitive development, and neurophysiology. A brief overview of the aims and objectives of each project is given, and in some cases a list of relevant scholarly literature. There are also details of project participants and events.

    Phenomenologically related work
    [2 Jun 2010 at 7:00pm]
Phenomenologically Related Work is the personal website of American philosopher Robert Welsh Jordan, hosted by Colarado State University. The site offers around 20 essays by Jordan, which have been published in journals or anthologies or presented at scholarly meetings over the course of a career spanning almost half a century. Also available are Jordan's own extensive notes on the works of Edmund Husserl and of Martin Heidegger. Jordan describes himself as espousing 'very hard line phenomenology', and notes on the site that his interpretation of Husserl and Heidegger differs significantly from the usual ones.

    [30 May 2010 at 7:00pm]
The Corporate Social Responsibility website, created by Mallen Baker, offers a range of resources for those interested in this growing area. The site offers a wide range of articles (including links to material on sister site Business Respect) on various aspects of the subject, including the environmental, social, and financial impact of various business practices. Other features of the site include: discussion of exactly what corporate social responsibility (CSR) is; some arguments for and against it; case studies; news items; reading suggestions and links to other Web resources; and a blog. Frans Hemsterhuis (1721-1790)
    [30 May 2010 at 7:00pm]
The Frans Hemsterhuis (1721-1790) website, prepared by the philosophy reference librarian at the University of Groningen, provides information about the life and work of this 18th-century Dutch philosopher. The site gives a brief biographical sketch, and an overview of Hemsterhuis's philosophical thought, which focused on human beings and the relationships they have with their environment. The feature of the site which is likely to be of most interest to serious scholars, however, is the selection of Hemsterhuis's writings. These are taken from a French edition of his works (users should note that no English translation is offered), and are provided as PDF documents.
    Nietzsche channel
    [20 May 2010 at 7:00pm]
The Nietzsche Channel is an extensive Web resource dedicated to the life and works of the 19th-century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900). The site hosts electronic versions of a large number of Nietzsche's publications, plus selections of unpublished works from his school days, correspondence, and notebooks. There is also a section titled 'Friedrich Nietzsche's Library', which is an attempt to construct an online collection of works which Nietzsche read, bought, borrowed, and referred to. At time of writing, the site was still under development: there is already a considerable amount of material in German, with plans to add both more German material and English translations in the future. Unfortunately, however, there is a lack of information about those responsible for the site.

Theoretical and Conceptual Advances in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Self Representation: Representations of the Minimal Self in Self-Narrative is a research project based at the University of Central Florida. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the European Foundation, the project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between philosophers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and cognitive neuroscientists in the USA and Europe. It considers connections between the 'minimal self' (which includes sense of ownership and agency) and the more fully developed 'narrative self', and is one part of the BASIC (Brain, Agency, Self, Intersubjectivity, and Consciousness) network of research projects. The project Web page offers an overview of the project, details of project staff, and a bibliography.
