Rare Coin Database Updated for June Sales

Publicized sales of the most valuable of all American coins for June 2008 have been added to our rare coin database. Leading the pack this month was a 1795 $5 Capped Bust Small Eagle gold coin, graded MS-65 by PCGS, selling for $586,500. Coming in second was an 1880 $4 Flowing Hair, graded PF-64 by PCGS, bringing $431,250. Coming in third was a 1792 half disme (technically a pattern coin, as the first regular production US coins were not minted until 1793), graded MS-63 PCGS, changing hands for $402,500.

Peace Dollars Updated for 2008

Coin Value Tables for each member of the Peace Dollar group have been updated to include 2008 trends. Most trends are up since 2006, the last time the tables were updated. Many of the increases are related to the rise in the price of silver bullion, though collector pressure continues to be a factor.

Indian Head Cents Updated for 2008

The Coin Value Tables for the Indian Head Cent series have been updated to include 2008 values. Since our last update in 2006, we have seen considerable price advancements, especially for the key dates in the series, the 1877 and 1909-S. The lower grades for the key dates, G and VG, where most collectors of ordinary means concentrate their purchasing activity, enjoyed the strongest gains.

Buffalo Nickel Value Trends Updated for 2008

The Buffalo Nickel Coin Value Tables are now updated for 2008. The tables were previously upated in 2006. Since then, we've seen strong price increases across the board, especially for key date coins in lower grades, which appeal to a broad range of collectors. The 1913-S Type 2 and 1937-D 3-legged buffalo enjoyed very sharp price surges.

1804 Silver Dollar Sells for $3.738 million

An 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollar sold for $3.738 million on April 17. The winning bid was placed through the Internet. Prior to the sale, the fabled coin was professionally cleaned and judged by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation as a PF-62. The seller purchased the silver dollar in 1993 for $475,000.

2008 Presidential Dollar Coins: Images and Issue Dates Released

Images of the 2008 Presidential Commemorative coins are out. These are 5th-8th coins in the presidential coin series, honoring James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren. The Mint also has announced the presidential dollar coin release schedule for 2008.

Designs for 2008 First Spouse Coins Unveiled by the Mint

On Nov 19, 2007, the US Mint unveiled designs for the 2008 First Spouse coins. The event was held at the White House. The First Spouse coinage of 2008 honors Elizabeth Monroe, Louisa Adams, the presidencies of Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren.

1894-S Barber Dime Sells for $1.9 million

A PF-66 Barber Dime, the finest known example of this classic numismatic rarity, sold for $1.9 million in July 2007. The seller paid "just" $1.32 million for the coin only two years ago.

1913 Liberty Head V Nickel Sells for $5 million.

April sales data for rare American coins is now posted. There wasn't much activity in the way of major auctions, but one private sale made blockbuster news. One of the five known 1913 Liberty Head V nickel changed hands for $5 million. This is the second highest price ever paid for a single US coin. Interestingly, this exact same coin was sold in mid-2005 for $4.15 million.
